Debuffs
A debuff is a curse your weekly boss leaves on you — a lingering penalty that follows you for days. Every boss has its own signature debuff (Wanderer's Haze, Leaden Curse, and so on — each boss card on All Bosses shows what it does). An active debuff appears in red on the Legacy tab and on the boss card.
When Debuffs Land
Debuffs are rolled once per night at the 2am reckoning, and the odds depend entirely on your Grace level that day:
| Grace Level | Debuff Chance |
|---|---|
| Blazing | 0% — untouchable |
| Burning | 0% — untouchable |
| Flickering | 10% |
| Forsaken | 35% |
That top half of the table is the real defense: a Burning-or-better day cannot be debuffed at all. Debuffs are how the realm punishes streaks of bad days, not single stumbles.
How Long They Last
Every debuff carries a countdown in days, set by the boss that inflicted it — usually Standard 4 days · Veteran 6 days · Legendary 7 days, though a few bosses break the pattern. The counter ticks down at each 2am run and the debuff expires on its own when it hits zero.
What They Do
Effects vary by boss — each one attacks a different part of your progress. The families you'll see:
- Rune penalties — a percentage cut to all Rune earnings, or to a specific category (tasks, workouts, meals, weeklies)
- Loot penalties — reduced drop chances
- Flask & rest penalties — weakened Flask potency, or Rest at Grace disabled outright
- Progress penalties — reduced Ember gain, Faith bonus disabled, login bonus withheld, boss damage multiplier reduced
- Grace attacks — a forced Grace tier drop, or Flickering days counting as Forsaken
- Companion attacks — a hit to companion happiness
The exact effect and numbers for every boss are on its card in All Bosses.
Getting Rid of One
- Neutralizing Boluses — an Uncommon consumable in your Pouch. Clears one active debuff instantly. The premium option.
- Cross a Site of Grace — every new 10-Ember milestone clears any active debuff as part of its blessing. See Sites of Grace.
- Wait it out — the countdown expires on its own.
- Return of the Tarnished — coming back after 5+ days away cleanses any active debuff as part of the comeback. See The Death System.
A Grace Ward absorbs a bad day (a Grace tier drop). It does not block or absorb a debuff — and a grace-attacking debuff applies its effect after the Ward has done its work. Wards protect your Grace; only Boluses, Sites of Grace, and time remove debuffs.
Notes & Tips
- Only one debuff can be active at a time — the realm is cruel, not unfair.
- A debuff clearing (by any means) is recorded in the Chronicle.
- If your boss's Rage is also active, you're dealing with two separate red boxes — rage raises counterattack damage (1.5x), the debuff does whatever its card says. Different mechanics, different cures.
